To the dismay of my 3-year-old self, I was placed in dance classes early in life. My parents were leery of the way I moved my arms in my high chair, when Peruvian flute music played. I trained, quitting often, because my first dance teachers were very very strict (call me a rebel, but I didn't like it.) At around age 10, I gave up on quitting dance classes, got into a competitive mode, and went on to win awards and scholarships. This took me to NYC, LA, Point Park Conservatory on a full scholarship, The University of Michigan with a partial scholarship, a professional tour in Costa Rica, scholarship studies in Jerusalem, solo performances in front of audiences of 4,000+ people, and other neat things.
The further I got into dance, the more I refined my technique, and the more styles I studied- the more I was given freedom to express in the movement style I was developing for myself. That's when I loved dance more and more- when dance became a vocabulary that was my own, and I got to share that vocabulary with other dancers, and 'say' things via choreography that was uniquely mine (always, transformed also by the dancers themselves.)
I love dancers- but to me, the term 'dancer' doesn't exclude people that have not trained in dance. Any human being can dance, and most human beings DO, sometimes without realizing how beautiful and natural and free their movement is.
So, I am CALLING ALL DANCERS- Including you beautiful untrained ones. Let's do some dancing.
See the "Gallery" page for excerpts from dance/movement pieces I've created. I hope to choreograph more things, featuring.. you!
